ICSI: an Advanced IVF Technique

ICSI—a procedure frequently suggested for those with a history of poor fertilization—might be a better fit for starting a family.

What is ICSI?

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is an advanced fertility treatment designed to help couples overcome severe male infertility. Unlike conventional IVF, where many sperm are placed near the egg to encourage natural fertilization, ICSI involves injecting a single healthy sperm directly into each mature egg. This technique is particularly effective in cases where sperm quality or quantity is compromised, giving couples an enhanced opportunity for successful fertilization and pregnancy.

When to Consider ICSI Treatment

Low Sperm Count

For men with significantly reduced sperm count, ICSI can increase the chances of successful fertilization by ensuring that a single, healthy sperm is selected and directly injected into the egg.

Obstruction

When blockages in the male reproductive tract, such as vas deferens issues, prevent sperm from being released naturally, ICSI becomes an ideal option.

Sexual Dysfunction

For men facing difficulties with ejaculation due to sexual dysfunction or other medical conditions, ICSI offers a solution by bypassing the need for ejaculation entirely. Sperm can be obtained surgically or through other assisted methods for direct injection into the egg.

Donor Sperm Use

In cases where donor sperm is required due to male infertility or single motherhood by choice, ICSI provides a highly controlled method for fertilization. This ensures that even with donor sperm, the fertilization process is closely monitored for optimal results.

Your ICSI Treatment Journey

Ovulation Induction
Fertility medications are administered to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple mature eggs, increasing the chances of successful fertilization.
Sperm Collection
The male partner provides a semen sample on the day of egg retrieval, or sperm may be surgically retrieved from the testes or epididymis if ejaculation is not possible.
Egg Retrieval
Eggs are collected from the ovaries using a minimally invasive procedure under ultrasound guidance. This step is crucial for obtaining mature eggs suitable for fertilization.
Fertilization
During ICSI, a skilled embryologist selects a single healthy sperm and injects it directly into each mature egg. This process ensures that even men with severe sperm abnormalities can still achieve fertilization.
Embryo Culture
After fertilization, the embryos are cultured in a lab for 2-3 days to allow them to develop and grow. This period is essential for monitoring the quality and development of the embryos.
Embryo Transfer
About 10–14 days after the embryo transfer, a blood test is performed to determine if the treatment was successful and if pregnancy has been achieved.

ICSI Success Rate

ICSI has proven to be highly effective for couples facing male infertility issues. Success rates vary based on factors such as the age of the woman, the quality of the eggs, and overall reproductive health.

On average, the success rate for ICSI can range from 35% to 50% per cycle, depending on these factors. At Silver Lining, we combine cutting-edge technology with personalized care to maximize the chances of success for each patient undergoing ICSI treatment.
