What is Oocyte Freezing/Egg Freezing?

Oocyte freezing, commonly known as egg freezing, is a process in which a woman’s eggs are harvested, frozen, and stored for future use.

This fertility preservation method allows women to preserve their reproductive potential and opt for family planning at a later time, even after natural fertility may have declined. At Silver Lining IVF, we offer egg freezing services customized to meet the needs of modern women looking to take control of their reproductive future.

Why Do Women Opt for Egg Freezing?

Career Planning

Some women choose to delay pregnancy due to career aspirations or personal goals. Freezing eggs provides them with the flexibility to focus on their career without sacrificing their fertility.

Premature Ovarian Aging

Women with a family history of premature ovarian failure or those diagnosed with early signs of ovarian aging may consider egg freezing as a proactive measure.

Medical Reasons

omen diagnosed with conditions like cancer, autoimmune diseases, or other medical issues that could affect fertility may opt for egg freezing before starting treatments like chemotherapy or radiation, which could harm their ovarian reserve.

Personal Choice

Some women who are not ready to start a family but want to preserve the option for biological children in the future may opt for egg freezing.

Egg Freezing Process: Step by Step

Ovarian Stimulation
Once the decision to proceed is made, the patient will undergo ovarian stimulation. This involves daily hormone injections for 10-14 days to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs in one cycle, instead of the usual single egg. Regular monitoring through blood tests and ultrasounds ensures the stimulation is working as intended.
Egg Retrieval
After the eggs reach maturity, a trigger injection is administered to finalize egg development. Egg retrieval is performed 36 hours after the trigger shot. This is a minimally invasive procedure done under mild anesthesia, where a needle is inserted into the ovaries via the vaginal wall to extract the mature eggs.
Egg Freezing
The retrieved eggs are then examined and frozen using a method called vitrification. This fast-freezing process helps prevent the formation of ice crystals, which can damage the eggs. Vitrified eggs are stored in liquid nitrogen at extremely low temperatures, where they remain viable for several years.
Future Use
When the woman is ready to use her frozen eggs, they are thawed, fertilized with sperm through IVF (In Vitro Fertilization), and the resulting embryos are transferred into her uterus to attempt pregnancy.

How Long Can I Store My Eggs for Use in Treatment?

Eggs frozen through vitrification can be stored for an extended period without any significant loss of quality. In most countries, eggs can legally be stored for up to 10 years. However, in certain circumstances, such as medical reasons, this period can be extended to up to 55 years, depending on local regulations and the individual’s needs.

Key Points about Egg Storage Duration:

  • Standard Storage Period: Typically, eggs are stored for up to 10 years for most women.
  • Extended Storage: For women who freeze their eggs for medical reasons (such as cancer treatment), the storage period can be extended beyond 10 years, sometimes up to 55 years, based on specific legal permissions.
  • Quality Over Time: The vitrification process ensures that the quality of eggs remains intact during long-term storage. There is no noticeable decline in the viability of the eggs, regardless of whether they are used after a few months or several years.
